Functional identity regulates aboveground biomass better than trait diversity along abiotic conditions in global forest metacommunities

چکیده

Although several studies have identified the effects of functional trait diversity (FTD) and/or identity, i.e. community-weighted mean (CWM) a trait, on aboveground biomass (AGB) along abiotic conditions, these AGB in global forest metacommunities are still largely unexplored. Here, we modelled (i.e. climate, soil and plot physical conditions) biotic [i.e. FTD, CWM conservative traits (CWMCT), acquisitive (CWMAT) dominance (FunDom; based plant maximum height or diameter)] factors 76 (from 24 studies). Using multiple linear regression models piecewise structural equation modeling (pSEM), tested hypothesis that both regulate but mass ratio mechanism underpins forests better than niche complementarity mechanism. We found contributed 45.39% 54.07%, respectively, to explained variance (R2 = 0.59), as such, shaped FTD 0.42–0.48), CWMCT 0.33–0.36), CWMAT 0.27–0.33) FunDom 0.59–0.61) through divergent effect sizes directions. The final best-fitted pSEM showed increased (? 0.49) ?0.35) ?0.11) decreased 0.52) compared negligible 0.04). This study supports effect, specifically overruling role tall-stature dominant trees AGB, at macroecological scale, hence, suggests suitable species' strategy is important promote carbon sequestration human well-being. expect our will advance field biodiversity–ecosystem functioning scale by using metacommunity concept approach.

Functional dominance rather than taxonomic diversity and functional diversity mainly affects community aboveground biomass in the Inner Mongolia grassland

The relationship between biodiversity and productivity has been a hot topic in ecology. However, the relative importance of taxonomic diversity and functional characteristics (including functional dominance and functional diversity) in maintaining community productivity and the underlying mechanisms (including selection and complementarity effects) of the relationship between diversity and comm...

Early subtropical forest growth is driven by community mean trait values and functional diversity rather than the abiotic environment

While functional diversity (FD) has been shown to be positively related to a number of ecosystem functions including biomass production, it may have a much less pronounced effect than that of environmental factors or species-specific properties. Leaf and wood traits can be considered particularly relevant to tree growth, as they reflect a trade-off between resources invested into growth and per...

Mapping Global Forest Aboveground Biomass with Spaceborne LiDAR, Optical Imagery, and Forest Inventory Data

As a large carbon pool, global forest ecosystems are a critical component of the global carbon cycle. Accurate estimations of global forest aboveground biomass (AGB) can improve the understanding of global carbon dynamics and help to quantify anthropogenic carbon emissions. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) techniques have been proven that can accurately capture both horizontal and vertical f...

Functional identity and diversity of animals predict ecosystem functioning better than species-based indices.

Drastic biodiversity declines have raised concerns about the deterioration of ecosystem functions and have motivated much recent research on the relationship between species diversity and ecosystem functioning. A functional trait framework has been proposed to improve the mechanistic understanding of this relationship, but this has rarely been tested for organisms other than plants. We analysed...

MODIS Based Estimation of Forest Aboveground Biomass in China

Accurate estimation of forest biomass C stock is essential to understand carbon cycles. However, current estimates of Chinese forest biomass are mostly based on inventory-based timber volumes and empirical conversion factors at the provincial scale, which could introduce large uncertainties in forest biomass estimation. Here we provide a data-driven estimate of Chinese forest aboveground biomas...
